Mon 20th Feb 2023 - Time Out Group pulls plans for 20,000 square foot-plus market in London’s Spitalfields

Time Out Group pulls plans for 20,000 square foot-plus market in London’s Spitalfields: Time Out Group has pulled its plans for a 20,000 square foot-plus food market in London’s Spitalfields. The company’s proposals for a Time Out Market at 106 Commercial Road, E1, included 12 permanent kitchens “with food from some of the city’s best local, homegrown talent – curated by Time Out editors”. It first applied to open in a grade II-listed, disused office block, on Commercial Road, in 2017, but had its initial proposals rejected by Tower Hamlets Council. A spokesperson from Time Out Group said: “Time Out Group confirms that it no longer intends to proceed with the development of Time Out Market at 106 Commercial Street. This is disappointing as we were looking forward to bringing our food and cultural market with its positive contribution – including new jobs, opportunities for local talent and benefits to the local economy – to this London borough. It is regrettable that, although recommended for approval by planning officers, the Tower Hamlets development committee chose to defer its decision on our application in 2022 after a process which has already taken several years, and during which we addressed all prior concerns. With an expectation of the process being drawn out by further delays, we have decided to no longer proceed with our application but focus our resources on other opportunities. We are grateful to everyone who has supported us throughout this process, in particular the landlord, Truman Brewery. We remain focused on our strategy of signing management agreements to open Time Out Markets in both the UK and globally. We are excited about the success of our seven existing Markets and the eight new locations in the pipeline in cities such as Barcelona, Cape Town and Vancouver. We are looking forward to opening here and in other cities which embrace having a Time Out Market as an addition to their city’s culinary and cultural offerings.” In March 2021, Time Out announced it would no longer open a food hall in London’s Waterloo. It told Propel: “Following recent media enquiries, Time Out Group confirms its subsidiary, Time Out Markets Central London, has informed London & Continental Railways it no longer intends to proceed with the development of Time Out Market London (Waterloo) due to the impact of the covid-19 pandemic.” It had signed a lease on a two-floor, 32,500 square-foot space in late 2018, at the time promising to bring “17 of the city’s most acclaimed chefs and restaurateurs” to its new home. BrewDog has since opened its 26,500 square-foot global flagship venue in the space.
